1st prize - SYN(es)THESIS International Competition for Musical Composition
Piece written for the 2nd edition of the SYN(es)THESIS International Competition and inspired by chosen painting:
”The painting I chose for this composition evoked a world of ethereal water. I decided to use all of the instruments available to create lush soundscapes with a feeling of sea-like vastness. The overall light-tone and pastel color palette of the painting is conveyed musically by the use of higher registers and harmonies with “open colours”. The vibraphone was an obvious choice for the scintillating quality of the colors and the overall dreamy atmosphere. Melodically, the abstract nature of the painting made me opt for recurring melodic contours, rather than recognizable themes or melodies. The main melodic idea that runs through the piece is one of a long ascending line which gains momentum, followed by a slower descending line, evoking the painting’s main line/contour, as well as the sound of waves. The melodic lines are always soft and undulating. Only the last section (starting at letter J) loses touch with this feeling of wave-like recurrence and anchor. This section represents for me the floating feeling that the painting’s symmetry evokes : all sense of gravity is lost and we dive into a world of floating dreams.”
